Big Island Sunrise redux

This is a different version of yesterday’s photo from Hawaii. I tend to like the starker quality of this one better. I looked at it as a straight black and white but found that the seaweed got completely lost in the rocks, so I went with a partially desaturated look.

I’m not entirely happy with either of these images but I’d be interested to hear what others think, good or bad, and which one you prefer.

Ok, you asked for it….but please don’t get me wrong, the work is very appealing…

Regardless of the tinting, the linear rocks in the foreground pull the viewer in rather dramatically, but when I get there, the focal point does wash out a bit.

Is it because of the crop? Does the crop pull the eye too far “off” the page?

Or is the “wash out” because of a softer contrast at the focal point? Perhaps more sun rays, more detail at the focal point would hold the eye a bit rather than leaving it toseek detail elsewhere… Are you editing the foreground and the focal area (the top 1/3rd) separately?

OK, I give. Forgive me; I must have overstepped your request. Sorry
