Sydney is a city of beaches and beachside communities and neighborhoods. Nearly all of them, at least along the ocean coastline, have saltwater pools constructed in the rocks at one end of the beach. Some are no more than splash pools, while others are full-sized swimming pools that are used to host swimming events on weekends. Near this one at Coogee beach is a small pool in a hidden area of the cliffs that has managed to maintain its status as a women’s only pool. While this is pretty much accepted even in these days of gender equality, there was a bit of controversy recently when a transgender person arrived to use the pool and unfortunately made some of the women uncomfortable.
