The best ebook you never knew you needed! Be sure to check it out.
Craft & Vision
And speaking of ebooks, Craft and Vision is out with their latest: Making Light: An Introduction to Off-Camera Flash. If you’ve ever been interested in the idea of getting your flash off the camera but have thought of the idea as too daunting, this is a great ebook to get you going. Written by Piet Van den Eynde who wrote another Craft and Vision ebook earlier this year on black and white processing that I highly recommended, it covers the basics of working with off-camera flash in a clear and easy to understand manner. Piet takes the mystery out of the equipment needed, even giving step by step instructions for setting up a remotely fired flash for both Canon and Nikon systems. And while giving the theory and formulas behind several lighting principles, he emphasizes the practical aspect. The ebook ends with 9 case studies to help illustrate the principles discussed throughout the ebook.

I’ve played around a bit with off-camera flash off and on over the last couple years, but have yet to master it in any real way. It can be really fun, but definitely challenging. While the basics of it are pretty straight-forward, it takes a lot of practice to get the details right. Here’s a recent one of Billy the Panda Boy at the University of Washington campus in Seattle with a bare 580EX II to camera-left.
