Although Darwin has been settled since the mid-1800s, there’s not a lot of old buildings or structures in Darwin. Between cyclones that blow everything away, the tropical climate that rots anything wooden, and Japanese bombs during WWII, things haven’t lasted very long here. In 1974, Cyclone Tracy pretty much wiped the city off the map, destroying 70% of the buildings. As such, there are very few buildings here that are pre-1974. One would think that stone structures, such as the one pictured here, would have a better chance of surviving the winds of a cyclone but one would be mistaken. They are apparently quite vulnerable to strong winds and this is one of the few surviving old buildings in the city.
