Washing by the River

Today’s Photo

This is from the Thaipusam Festival at Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the festival, tens of thousands of devotees of the Hindu faith come to pay homage to Lord Murugan. Prior to climbing 272 steps up to the Temple Caves, the worshipers will wash themselves near the Sungei Batu (Rocky River). The festival is known for the devotees who pierce themselves with skewers and fish hooks as acts of penance.

Later this year I am scheduled to have a photo essay on the Thaipusam Festival published in SE Asia Backpacker magazine.

The Towers in Tainan

Today’s Photo

I’m starting a short series of black and white images. I posted one similar to this one about a year ago, of the Chihkan Towers in Tainan, Taiwan. Looking back, I think I prefer this one in black and white as it seems to simplify the image, whereas the color seems to overwhelm the first on. What do you think?

Mangroves

Today’s Photo

I’ve recently settled myself down in the tropical Australian ‘city’ of Darwin. I’ve been here for several weeks but with getting settled and all, I haven’t had much chance to get out with the camera. Located in the far north of the country, Darwin is about the same distance from Singapore as it is from Sydney. I get asked a lot, “Why Darwin?” In addition to its tropical climate (which I love) and the availability of cheap flights to SE Asia, this picture taken just this evening is another reason why.

After the Rain

Today’s Photo

I’ve tried getting images like this is the past with mixed success. I’m relatively happy with how this one turned out. We were wandering around the Malaysian town of Ipoh, trying to avoid getting soaked in the heavy showers. It can be frustrating sometimes to have to deal with inclement weather while you’re traveling, but it can also make for some dramatic images.

Here’s something from the El Chiflón waterfall park in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. This is a place where it would have been easy to spend an entire afternoon playing around getting images like this. Alas, I was there with on a day tour (something I only do occasionally) and only had about an hour.
