A Sense of Place

Mitla is a small, mostly quiet village about 30 minutes outside of Oaxaca, Mexico. Mitla is known for a small archeological site of Zapotec ruins, which is what most touristas come to see. Ruins are interesting but it’s often the everyday life and scenes of a place that I really find most appealing.

The New Year

Well, it’s the new year again. Actually we’re almost into the second week already (where does the time go…?). Commonly around this time of year, people make new years resolutions which are then quickly forgotten or abandoned. I don’t do new year’s resolutions but I thought this might be a good time to post my Bucket List. There’s no resolutions involved with it, it’s just a list of things I’d like to do or see or accomplish before I, you know… kick off. It’s not a static list and will change over time as my priorities and interests change. Initially I wondered if it’s appropriate to post this on a blog that’s primarily about photography, but then what’s the point of having your own blog and website if you can’t post what you want. Check it out and let me know what you think. Do you have your own bucket list?

The ruins at Mitla are small but much of it has been nicely restored and is well maintained. Most of it can be seen in about an hour. It’s worth the one hour bus ride from Oaxaca just for the bus ride itself and the chance to wander through a quiet rural Mexican town.

The Lobby

The Passports with Purpose fundraiser is continuing, although time is running short for you to contribute and bid on a fabulous gift. A number of bloggers are giving away Kindles (I love mine!), including the new Kindle Fire. There is also a great selection of hotel packages – some worth a significant amount of money – which you can bid on for a donation of just $10. Unfortunately, the donations are not coming in as hoped. As you can see below, they have a ways to go to reach their goal of $80,000 by Dec. 16th. Considering all the consumer craziness that occurred on Black Friday, just to buy cheap waffle irons, surely you can spare $10 to help build libraries for children in Zambia (and a chance to win an awesome prize!)

My previous post was a detail photo of the exterior of the Teatro (theatre) Principal in Puebla, Mexico. Today’s photo is of the interior lobby of the building. Although the lobby was wide open for anyone to walk into, the rest of the theatre was closed so I have no idea how interesting it might have been.

The Teatro Prinicpal

There’s still time, before the end of the year or even for a Christmas gift, to get your copy of one of my 2012 calendars. I also have some wonderful fine art prints that would make great Christmas gifts, also. Check’em out!

Capilla Real

Mexico is a very colorful place. Often, even in the poorer sections of the towns, there is a certain aesthetic appreciation that has been absent in many other places I’ve traveled.
