Posing at the Chikan Towers

Just a quick reminder that if you haven’t checked out my new ebook, Capturing the Journey, now’s a great time to do so!

I suppose I should be saying something about the 10th anniversary of 9/11 but I think there will be plenty said about it today(too much maybe?) and I would have little to add to the conversation. So instead, I offer you a break from it. I’m back at the Chikan Towers in Tainan, Taiwan again for this one, where we find a family posing for a photo: something most everyone does while on vacation. I, however, typically try to avoid placing myself in front of a camera. Most of the time I’m more comfortable looking through the lens rather than standing in front of it.

Ximending

Today’s Photo

The Ximending district is Taipei’s answer to Tokyo’s Shibuya, a busy shopping and entertainment area popular with the young and fashionable. Small shops and restaurants line the narrow streets and alleyways, teeming with trendy youth. Typical of many shopping districts the world over anymore, local food and fashion is interspersed with the usual Western chain outlets. Have no fear, a Starbucks is near. The bright lights and mass of people can be entertaining for a while but if you are not into shopping and crowds, it can also quickly become a bit overwhelming.

Although it doesn’t compare with Shibuya in size, this is certainly an area you’ll want to check out if you’re visiting Taipei. And if you tire of the bright lights and noise, you can step into the small Tin Hau temple for a quiet respite.

Reflection in the Pond

Today’s Photo

Located in a park near the Sun Yat-sen Memorial in Taipei, this pond created a wonderful reflection of the Taipei 101 tower at sunset. It was difficult to get a good composition which included the whole tower in the reflection, in part because the tower is so tall. In general, Taipei is not a ‘tall’ city – one of the first things I noticed about the place. As such, the Taipei 101 tower – until recently the tallest building in the world – really stands out from everything around it.

Yuen-Fong

The best ebook you never knew you needed! Be sure to check it out.

Today’s Photo

Taipei has probably one of the highest percentage of scooter ownership anywhere. I’ve got no numbers to back that up but there are a LOT of them. It’s crazy how many of them there are in the city. The streets – and the sidewalks – are clogged with them. Most of the scooters are black, nondescript cookie-cutter models that typically had a rather rundown look about them. Some of the hipster had wicked tricked out models, and occasionally you would see these really cool old Taiwanese motorcycles. The old motorcycles often had a lot of character but I wonder what the maintenance would be like for them.

The Death Star

If you haven’t seen the details regarding my new ebook, Capturing the Journey: A Beginner’s Guide to the Basics of Travel Photography, be sure to check it out!

Today’s Photo

I posted a similar photo of the Core Pacific City shopping mall in Taipei back in June. It’s a really funky place that evokes images of the Death Star in Star Wars embedded into the side of a building. It has roughly 10 levels, including the portions that are below ground.
