I’ve been on a bit of a <a href="http://blog.darinrogers.net/2012/05/hello-mr-grasshopper/" title="Hello! I thought maybe you all might find it a nice change of pace from all the sunsets and Singapore skyline photos. But then, I don’t really know what anybody thinks about anything I post, or if anyone is even out there (hi mom), since no one ever leaves any comments.

I’ve recently settled myself down in the tropical Australian ‘city’ of Darwin. I’ve been here for several weeks but with getting settled and all, I haven’t had much chance to get out with the camera. Located in the far north of the country, Darwin is about the same distance from Singapore as it is from Sydney. I get asked a lot, “Why Darwin?” In addition to its tropical climate (which I love) and the availability of cheap flights to SE Asia, this picture taken just this evening is another reason why.

Malaysia’s Langkawi Island was one of the highlights of my recent trip through Malaysia and Thailand. There were certainly other tourists there but it was low-key and you didn’t feel like you were being overrun by other Westerner’s. There were actually locals on the beach. I stumbled on this place here one morning while out walking and then came back several times with the camera. It was actually a rather challenging place to photograph as there were a lot of boats around which made for a very busy scene. I have a few more from here I’ll probably get around to posting in the near future.

This isn’t the most dramatic of lightning shots, but I would like the simplicity of this image even without the lightning. I like how the lightning adds a bit of drama, though. This is looking north from the Thai island of Ko Lanta. I don’t have a lot of of wonderful things to say about Ko Lanta. I guess it’s great if you want to go to Thailand but feel like you’re on a European beach.

Today’s Photo

The Kek Lok Si temple is a large, sprawling complex just outside of Georgetown on Penang Island in Malaysia. It’s easily accessible by bus from Georgetown, although you’ll have to make your way through a narrow arcade lined with t-shirt and trinket sellers as you climb the stairs up to the entrance. It’s possible to climb to the top of the 7-tier pagoda where you’ll get magnificent views of the distant city. The temple is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia, so there’s plenty to see even if you don’t want to make the climb up the tower.
